چکیده

Fungiform papillae of the tongue are small projections involved in taste function that are typically located on the lateral aspects and tip of the tongue. They are called fungiform papillae because of their close resemblance to a fungus. In fair-skinned individuals, they are usually pink or red, but in dark-skinned individuals, they are frequently pigmented and are considered a variant of normal oral pigmentation. We report a case of pigmented fungiform papillae of the tongue (PFPT) and describe its dermoscopic features, which have been rarely reported in the literature. A 30-year-old black woman with no personal or family history of interest was evaluated for a pigmented lesion with no apparent cause on the tongue. The lesion had appeared in adolescence but had remained stable and asymptomatic (Fig. 1). The patient was not taking any regular medication, did not smoke, had not had dental treatment in the area of

Pigmentation of the Fungiform Papillae of the Tongue in a Child Secondary to Iron Deficiency Anaemia: An Uncommon Occurrence and Association

Diagnosis of pigmented lesions of the mouth and oral mucosal tissues is challenging. Even though epidemiology may be of some help in orientating the clinician and even though some lesions can be diagnosed on clinical grounds alone, the definitive diagnosis requires histopathological examination. We report a case of pigmented fungiform papillae on the tongue secondary to iron deficiency anaemia....

Tongue structure in the long-eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus): A scanning electron microscopic study

The aim of this study was to investigate the dorsal surface of the long-eared hedgehog tongue using scanning electron microscopy. The tongue of the long-eared hedgehog is rectangular-shaped with an elongated body and a widened root and a marked deep median groove can be seen on its dorsal surface. A characteristic feature of the lingual root is presence of two huge laterally situated folds. The...

Dermoscopic Features of a Black Hairy Tongue in 2 Japanese Patients

Dermoscopic features of a black hairy tongue have never been reported. Dermoscopy might be useful in speculating pathologic features of oral lesions. The objective was to identify additional dermoscopic criteria. Two Japanese patients who were clinically given a diagnosis of "black hairy tongue" were evaluated for dermoscopic features. We have shown characteristic dermoscopic features of browni...

Refinement of innervation accuracy following initial targeting of peripheral gustatory fibers.

During development, axons of the chorda tympani nerve navigate to fungiform papillae where they penetrate the lingual epithelium, forming a neural bud. It is not known whether or not all chorda tympani axons initially innervate fungiform papillae correctly or if mistakes are made. Using a novel approach, we quantified the accuracy with which gustatory fibers successfully innervate fungiform pap...
